More about Volunteering

The Kintari Foundation has been working and supporting the education of local children, teenagers and adults on the island of Lombok since 2006.

Right now, Kintari Foundation runs three different locations for afternoon English classes in the villages of Kuta, Petiwung and Emuntung, and we also provide English classes at SD Ngolang Government School and Pogem Community School. In 2018, we built a new kindergarten in Ngolang village where the previous kindergarten building, which we also built in collaboration with the local people, was damaged after a series of earthquakes. A new addition to our volunteer program is our collaboration with HP Inc. and its Singapore-based subsidiary. Through this collaboration we have successfully started the project of the first public computer lab in Lombok, located at the Kintari headquarters in Kuta.

Through these courses and programs, we currently provide English language and computer literacy education to more than 300 students from surrounding villages.

The classes and thus the volunteer work are conducted from Monday to Friday. A volunteer’s normal day varies depending on what classes or courses they are given to teach. Classes at Ngolang Public School run every day from Monday to Thursday, so Kintari provides one English lesson per day for each class in the school. Normally, English is not taught at all in primary schools in Indonesia. Our classes are held at the same time normally around noon. This teaching takes place all year round. Volunteers are involved in teaching the children daily (teaching English, painting, singing, games, etc.) The load of the lessons is always up to the volunteers but now the learning unit plans created for all in-school and after-school lessons and classes will help in planning the lessons and reviewing what the children have already learned.

English classes at the Petiwung/Pogem Community School are held twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. This school is located just five minutes away from the school in Ngolang, so we try to make sure that the classes at these two schools build on each other. Classes in Petiwung start around half past 11am and last for one hour.

Our newly built Kintari Nursery in Ngolang is also open every weekday. Children only attend the nursery in Lombok for two hours a day. Our Indonesian teachers are in charge of the first hour and then help with the English lesson, which starts from 9am.

Afternoon classes and times change or increase throughout the year depending on availability. We regularly have two afternoon courses in Kuta, one at the Kintari base and the other at the volunteers‘ accommodation (called Edy’s). This is also where our new computer room has been built in which classes are held every weekday. Our new Indonesian teacher takes care of these computer courses, but if there is interest it is possible to have a computer course with the children in your direction. Other afternoon classes are held in the village of Petiwung at our other base (called near Lamun). Here there are two courses run by our Indonesian teachers and another two later in the afternoon run by volunteers. One of these courses is for our Fantastic Class, which are children supported by sponsors from the Czech Republic so that they can go as far as possible in their studies. The last venue for our afternoon classes is a recently opened one in Emuntung village (called Jun’s), where classes are normally led by our Indonesian former student and current teacher Jun, but who is happy to split the course with volunteers or add a new group of children/teens if interested.

In addition to the kindergarten, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are reserved for volunteers who can use these three days to travel around the island and discover more of the beauty of Indonesia.

In this area of South Lombok, education is very important, especially education in English and computer skills due to the rapidly growing tourism industry. The children’s English language skills give them the opportunity to further their studies and gain employment in the newly emerging accommodation and restaurants. Children from poor backgrounds who attend schools in the area, if they do not get an education, will not only lose the opportunity for later employment in the developing Kuta or more distant towns, but in addition their families and homes will be pushed further inland to make way for the construction of new hotels. Thus, locals will not be able to benefit for themselves from development in their homeland, but will instead lose even more. That is why we are trying to educate these children in such a way that they can continue their studies and be employed in the tourism jobs that already dominate the region.

We also try to emphasize and educate the locals on waste and environmental issues, which is a difficult challenge for everyone, especially in Indonesia and on the island of Lombok, where awareness of these issues and topics is really low.

Unfortunately, there is a shortage of local teachers and their education and qualifications are deplorable, as is the awareness of children and their parents about basic hygiene and habits, resulting in a number of childhood skin diseases and other related problems. Thus, Kintari Foundation is trying to help in providing medical care and medicines for sick children and adults, and teaching hygiene habits to children at school.

Accommodation and food

Accommodation is provided to volunteers in Kuta at the Kintari Foundation site. There are several rooms in the volunteer building just for you. Breakfast is provided for the volunteers.

Other meals need to be arranged during the day in Kuta or dinner arrangements can be made directly at our Kintari base.

Unfortunately, our resources do not yet allow us to cover the costs of accommodation and meals, so volunteers are responsible for their own costs.

Transportation

Volunteers pay their own transportation to Indonesia. Kintari assists with securing cheap and convenient airfare and advises on everything necessary before and during the trip and stay.

A free shuttle service is provided from the airport in Lombok (Praya) or the port in Lembar to take volunteers directly to Kuta. Volunteer program coordinators and local teachers, speaking English, help with translation if needed and with teaching in schools. Transportation is also provided free of charge when medical treatment or visa extensions are needed.

The easiest mode of transport locally is to rent a scooter, which can be used to transport participants not only to school but also along the coast to nearby beaches and villages. For non-drivers, the Kintari coordinator will arrange trips to the area in his/her car and transport to school on his/her own motorbike. They will also teach interested students how to drive the scooter and help with on-site arrangements such as visa extensions, medical treatment, purchasing school supplies, etc.

Other activities

Lombok Island is one of the most beautiful islands in Indonesia. During free days it is possible to ride a scooter or a car around the whole island, which offers white beaches, clear waters, as well as a rich underwater world, ideal waves for surfers, traditional villages for those interested in folklore and beautiful nature with the second highest volcano in Indonesia, Rinjani.

At the same time, Lombok is the starting point for a cruise to see the world’s largest ravens on the islands of Komodo and Rinca. The ferry between Lombok and the neighbouring island of Bali runs 24 hours a day and the cruise takes 3-4 hours. Bali offers a unique Hindu culture, monuments and tourist attractions.

Terms of participation

Knowledge of the English language and a desire to work with children. Knowledge of Indonesian is an advantage (makes it easier to communicate with local teachers who usually do not speak English). Experience in teaching children is an advantage. Teaching degree is not a requirement.

What is important is enthusiasm and commitment to a distant country with a completely different culture and mentality, courage, courage, good humor, readiness for a completely different perception of time and „system“ and independence. The ability to deal independently and constructively with different situations, the joy of working with children and the desire to help. To participate in the program, a previous interview and subsequent methodological preparation for teaching in the field is required.

Health and Safety

Indonesia is one of the countries with malaria, dengue fever and many other diseases typical of third world countries, but these diseases are really rare in Lombok. Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and tetanus are required to stay. Antimalarials are also recommended but are not a necessity.

Lombok is not one of the critical areas, malaria incidence is almost zero, but dengue does occur occasionally. Protection with mosquito nets and repellents is important. Drink only bottled water. Drinks with ice and unpeeled fruit should be avoided (prevention of intestinal infections).

What to bring

International driving licence, medication, mosquito net, repellents, light cotton overcoats (otherwise it’s a cheap affair to get them locally). Longer clothing covering shoulders and knees (trousers, skirts and tops) is required for school; Islam is prevalent in Lombok and short and bold clothing is not appropriate.

Warm clothing is essential for climbing the mountains, as well as for any night ferry crossings where it tends to be cold (otherwise the temperature in Lombok is still around 30°C). From November to February there is a rainy season. Travel insurance.

How did some of the volunteers like it in Kintari?

„Kintari, influenced by local culture, has its pros and cons. But when I finally look into the eyes of those children, I realize my calling. Lombok is great, I know every corner here.“

Jakub Jíša

Traveller | Kintari Coordinator

„I love it in Lombok, my boyfriend and I are even building a cozy little natural hut. The different culture of Indonesia gives you a great insight into life…“

Dana Bartošová

Therapist

„Teaching those kids to take their first steps with a mouse in their hand was an experience. You realize again what is commonplace for us – it doesn’t have to be for others…I believe it will broaden their horizons a bit more.“

Barbora Kvapilová

Teacher

„The facilities at Kintari foundation are amazing and friendly. Because we had both Indonesian lessons and those who are a little bit talented in dance could take classes in traditional Indonesian dance.“

Tereza Kracíková

Student at the Faculty of Science, University of Hradec Králové

„I spent three weeks in Lombok and I have to say I would go back in a heartbeat. The kids were great, even if sometimes the language differences held us back. I managed to travel around the area, including Bali and Nusa Penida.“

Barbora Abelová

Student Roskilde University

„The locals are very nice people, they try to help you, they smile and you have this pleasant feeling that nothing can happen to you. Not many people speak English, but we still got along.“

Adriana Lejsková

Student of the University of Creative Communication in Prague
